West Perrine takes its name from Henry Perrine, the plant scientist whose heirs received the land grant that once covered this part of South Dade. Until the 2000 Census it was part of a larger Perrine. The eastern part later became part of Palmetto Bay, and West Perrine stayed unincorporated, between U.S. 1 and Zoo Miami. Families know Wilbur B. Bell Park, formerly West Perrine Park, on SW 104th Avenue, whose Family Aquatic Center opened in 2016 with slides and walk-in pools. We focus on the single-family streets here. By Census estimates, about 2,000 of the community’s homes are single-family houses, and the typical home was built in the mid-1970s. That means many backyard pools are close to 50 years old, and a lot of the pumps, filters, and plumbing behind them have been through decades of South Florida weather.
